Why Should I Sign Up?
The more people we have on the donor register, the better the chance of finding an exact tissue type match for our patients. All it takes is a simple cheek swab and you could be the donor who saves the life of a patient.
It costs nothing to join the BMDP Register, but not acting quickly enough could cost someone his or her life. Over the years, we have had many success stories but a lot more can be done and now YOU can help to save a life.
In Singapore’s multiracial society, we need donors from every racial group because matches tend to be found among those with a similar ethnic background.
The odds of finding a match are 1 in 20,000 and even lower for Malay and Indian patients, because we have a shortage of Malay and Indian donors. If you are from a minority ethnic background, we desperately need you to sign up and join the Register.
If you’re 17 to 49, in good health and understand the implications of bone marrow donation, sign up as a potential donor at our office or request a Do-It-Yourself postal kit here.
Alternatively, you can drop by one of our centres at the Singapore General Hospital or the National University Hospital to request a kit. All we require is a simple buccal swab inside the mouth to test and establish your HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) tissue type.
After you sign up, we will call you only if your HLA tissue type matches perfectly with that of a patient in need. For more information to help you decide, please refer to the FAQs.
